Today my printed book arrived at my house. I was very excited with SK being the my first PoD book.

At first sight the book looks beautiful with its sturdy cover. For 300 pages it seems to be quite thin. The paper is a bit wavy, which is probably due to too short a time between printing and binding.

The page spread isn't perfect. At three sides a white border is visible, only at the bottom the printed area reaches the border of the page. Furthermore the position of the page spread isn't constant throughout the book. So it seems to be an effect of post-printing production.

The printing quality is high, the text clear and very readable. The images ... well. The transfer from colour image to grey scale wasn't too successful. The image on page 5 lost its punch, the bird-creature on page 143 is nigh invisible.

Now, this sounds rather negative, doesn't it? But it isn't meant this way. The main function of a book, i.e. presenting the text in a readable fashion and being a durable "container" for it, is fulfilled. I'm very much looking forward to reading it. If I want to have a beautiful SK experience, i can open up the PDF version. :-)

Now I'm off to finish A Dance with Dragons before I can dive into the Kingdoms!

Hi Jan, that's distressing about the white border on three sides of the page. I don't have that on my B&W version (I have it on a couple pages in my color version, but they told me it was an anomaly). The files I uploaded have graphics done "full bleed," I believe the term is, with graphics extending well beyond the printable edge of the page. So there shouldn't be anything like that. Grr. I will email them.

And yeah, some of the greyscale stuff just isn't as awesome as the color stuff. I did the best I could with the conversions.

But I'm glad you like it! Have fun with the novel and I hope you enjoy SK just as much!

I got my hardcover version last night, and leafing through it reminded me that it is a tragedy that I'm not running this at the moment. But that is how it goes when you have players that don't like fantasy :(

Anyway. I like it a lot. Very fond of the cover. Like the image and the subdued coloring. Still not crazy about that new border, but in color all the art looked good. The text is clear and very readable. Some passages, like the class abilities, are a lot easier to read on paper than in the pdf since it is a lot easier to spot the name of the abilities. The maps from the chapter on the Claw looks a lot better on paper than on the screen. The size of the book really brings home how complete this game is. It has got everything you need.

I need to play this more.
