I suppose that this could be considered to contain some spoilers if someone really wants to wait for the book or such. If so, you should probably stop reading...
...still here? Okay. My question has to do with the wizard's familiar. The book states that they are spellbound. Does this interfere with trying to use magic, or is it considered to be similar to a Master/Apprentice relationship?

As far as the book goes, it counts. In fact, I think the caster himself counts... unless the Wild Surge example is counting the beetles or the savage... which may be possible as I'm not sure what a Kvalt is yet.
That said, I would ignore the familiar for interference purposes in my own games citing some kind of magical bond.

IMO wild surges should only apply when there's more than one spellbound creature; however, having a random effect every time a magic user rolled a 1 would be fun :) As far as a familiar, I'd rule it like a master-apprentice relationship where you two don't interfere with each other, but interfere with magic in general. A familiar is an awesome thing to have, but to have it @#$% up your magic for not THAT huge of an effect seems kinda harsh; however, IDK what the intended ruling is, and I haven't had a chance to test both ways.
